Event Log Search Made Easy

March 26, 2009 11:53 by Al Katawazi

I recently found this great free tool that saved me a ton of time sifting through event logs and wanted to share it with my readers.  Its called Event Log Explorer and its created by the guys over at FSPro Labs, link here. Warning: you have to fill out a form to get a personal license for the software but they do give you 30 days to try it out free without filling out the form. Also commercial licenses do cost a small amount of money, but developers have to feed their families too :D. So here are a quick list of features that I really liked:

  • Allows you to search any part of the event log
  • Has a filter that allows you to filter results by a set criteria
  • Allows you to print out your entire event log

The big problem with Microsofts event log viewer is mostly the search feature. You end up having to painfully sift through a bunch of entries that have nothing to do with what you are looking for. In my case I had an app that was behaving badly and the application folder had 5000 entries in it, I simply put in the url of my web app and hit the filter button and the only results I saw pertained to my application. 20 minutes later I had all my bugs resolved and I spent the rest of the day writing up this blog entry. Hope you enjoy, here are a few screen shots.
